Bill Scott, an East Northport, N.Y., reader, writes:

“You recently quoted a news item referring to ‘the amount of jobs created via small business.’
You didn’t point out the mistake of writing ‘the amount’ when it should have been ‘the number.’ ”
You are correct.
We should use “number” for what can be counted and “amount” for what can’t.
And is it almost time for QT”s biennial reminder that we should use “fewer”for what can be counted and “less” for what can’t–no matter what most grocery checkouts say?
